Cross-cultural communication is a difficult concept because culture itself is complex. Whether you are talking about cross-cultural communication or intercultural communication you are also talking about diversity. This short video aims to explain a few concepts so you can quickly grasp the fundamentals of cross-cultural communication and get a better intercultural understanding. Comprehending any culture is a difficult task, because traditions and customs differ from our own. In business, cross-cultural and other differences must be set aside for the sake of productivity. But first you have to recognise them! To get a flavour for cross-cultural communication Dr Deborah Swallow mentions three of the most striking cultural differences that people face when working with international colleagues and people from diverse communities. First, there is the perception of Time and how different cultures relate to it. For cross-cultural enthusiasts this is the most obvious. Second, cultures may be either direct or indirect in the way they communicate. In intercultural communication this often causes the most problems and is one of the first insights one must appreciate when learning about cross-culture. The third concept Dr Deborah Swallow introduces is the cross-cultural differences related to rules and how in a diverse world learning that strict adherence to the rules can be a matter of degree. All these characteristics have implications in the workplace and the more we understand about cross-cultural differences the better able we are to work more productively with diversity. We should never denigrate any other culture but rather help people to understand the relationship between their own culture and the dominant culture. When you understand another culture or language, you get to understand your own better. This is where cross-cultural and intercultural communication plays its part – in understanding diversity better.
